It’s knowing how to read a river, safely move through changing water, building the right rig a client can cast, making the right presentation to the fish, handle a boat, manage a client, and make good decisions when conditions change. It’s a combination of technical skill, river knowledge, communication skills, safety, and experience.

Hare’s Ear Fly Fishing Guide School is a four-day, hands-on program designed to teach you what it really takes to become a professional fishing guide. We started from the ground up, and have generated a great reputation with our clients in the last 10 years.

Whether your goal is to build a career as an independent guide, add guiding to an existing outdoor business, or simply become a more knowledgeable and capable angler, this course puts you on the water and teaches the skills that matter.

Throughout the program, students will work through the essential components of professional guiding, including:

● Rigging & Equipment — Understanding rods, reels, leaders, tippet, flies, knots, boat equipment, and how to prepare for different fishing situations.

● Wading & River Safety — Reading water, choosing safe routes, positioning anglers, managing changing conditions, and understanding the responsibilities that come with putting clients on the river.

● Rowing & Boat Handling — Learn the fundamentals of rowing, boat positioning, navigating current, approaching fishing water, and safely managing a boat with clients aboard.

● Fly Presentation — Improve casting, mending, drift management, fly placement, and the ability to teach these skills to someone else.

● Reading Water & Finding Fish — Learn to identify productive water, understand seasonal patterns, recognize feeding opportunities, and develop a plan for the day.

● Client Management — Guiding people is just as important as guiding them to fish. Learn communication, instruction, expectations, professionalism, and how to create an experience clients remember.

● Guide Preparation — Learn how to prepare before the client ever steps into the boat, from weather and water conditions to equipment, safety, logistics, and daily planning.

● Becoming an Independent Guide — Understand the business side of guiding, including building your brand, developing clients, creating a professional operation, and turning your skills into a sustainable guide business.
